The drivers had exceeded the four and eight hour driving limits and the tive-and-ahalf hour duty limit, they had driven for more than 48 hours in a week and for more than 92 hours in a tbrtnight.

They had failed to rake the required weekly rest periods, to enter the required details on tachograph charts, and to use the mode switch.

Most of the offences before

the court were committed in February and March and were only a part of the offences disclosed b)•• the computer, he said.

Defending counsel John Backhouse said the drivers were engaged on carrying marerials to motorway construction sites and a lot of the driving was off the public road.

That did not count as driving Mile hut the difficulty was that if the driver did not alter the mode switch there was way of knowing how much of the time had been spent driving off the road.

The drivers spent a lot of time waiting in queues at the quarries and construction sites. They took their breaks during those times.
