He was acting director of mechanical engineering research and was, -until recently, superintendent of the engineering division of the National Physical Laboratory.

MR. A. FiOSKER, planning controller. has succeeded MR. J. THORPE as production manager of Leyland Motors. Ltd. Mr. Thorpe has been seconded to the Ministry of Supply. Mr. Hosker will be assisted by MR, C. H. RIMMER, engine-shop superintendent, w h o becomes headquarters chief superintendent. MR. J. FAIRCLOUGH, Comet factory superintendent, has also been seconded to the Ministry.

M AJ.-G EN. E. H. CLAYTON. CR.. C.B.E., 0.B.E., has been placed in charge of the service activities of the Austin Motor Co., Ltd., throughout the world. In July, he relinquished his appointment as director-general of fighting vehicles at the Ministry of Supply. MR. C. H. ROWLEY is CO assist him in the capacity of service manager (technical) and MR. H. N. WHITEHOUSE as service manager (spares).

Ma. J. A. BARNETT has gained the diploma of the Royal Society of Arts as the candidate in Scotland who achieved the highest aggregate of marks in all of the subjects for which he sat during the three-year course under Scheme B. He has been awarded a L5 5s. prize by the Scottish Road Passenger Transport Association. Mr. Barnett was also the top student for 1951 in the third-year examinations and gains the Association's. £2 2s. award. MR. J. GRANGER was top student in the first-year examinations and MR. W. R. COOPER in the second-year; they also qualify for a E2 2s. prize.

MR. S. HOLLANDS, director of technical services, A.C.V. Sales, Ltd., has retired after 38 years' service.

MR. H. E. Etis has been appointed joint publicity manager and public relations officer of A.C.V. Sales, Ltd.

MR. R, H. STENSON. deputy manager of Burton-on-Trent Transport Department, has retired after an years' service.

MR. WILLIAM PATE, B.Sc., works manager of Albion Motors, Ltd., for 22 years, has retired. His successor is MR. W. P. KIRKWOOD, B.Sc.

MR. F. H. Perm, formerly sales manager of Henley's ryre and Rubber Co., Ltd., received a presentation, last week, to mark his retirement.

CAPT. R. P. MINCH1N, formerly deputy commander in charge of Metropolitan Police transport, has joined the research department of Harry Ferguson, Ltd MR. A. KULACILAKE, assistant manager of Colombo Corporation's transport department, is visiting Wolverhampton to examine trolleybus operating technique.

MR. Aux FRASER, vice-chairman and managing director of Girling. Ltd.. and MR. Notern, the company secrotary, are to fly to South Africa on November 15 to inspect the new Curling depot there.

MR. R. E. MANNRSGHAM-BULLER, K.C., M.P., has resigned from the

deputy -chairmanship of Brown Brothers, Ltd., having been appointed Solicitor-General in the new Government.

SIR WILLIAM ROOTES Will be joint head of the British delegation to the international Conference of Manufacturers to be held in New York from December 2-5. He will act as personal deputy for the president of the Federation of British Industries.
