• O'Donovan Transport of Cork scooped a double award at the Irish Road Haulage Association's annual conference in Galway over the weekend.

The company won Haulier of the Year and International Haulier of the Year In the IRHA Road Transport Awards 2002, which are sponsored by Commercial Motor Ireland, Eurotunnel and communications specialist, 02.

K&L Deliveries, also from Cork, won National Haulier of the Year; McCabe Transport of Cavan won Small Operator of the

Year and Tennyson Treacy International of Kilkenny won Best Newcomer of the Year—the company was formed in August 2001 and runs one truck on international work. Presenting the awards, CM editor Patric Cunnane said the Judges had been impressed by the very high standard of customer care that was offered by all the entrants.

Former IRHA president Gerry McMahon was presented with a new award for Special Services to the Industry.

Cunnane said that McMahon's decision to lead a nationwide fuel protest in September 1999 was a pivotal moment for the industry, leading to cuts in fuel duty and the setting up of the haulier/government Task Force to tackle the industry's problems, including illegal haulage.

Shortlisted finalists were Keenan International, International Haulier of the Year; Cargocare and Alltrans, National Haulier of the Year; and Whitegate Overland Freight, Small Operator of the Year
