Leggett Freightways pleaded guilty to failing to ensure be safety of its employees under the Health and Safety Act 1974, following the death of Gokhan Keles.
Wood Green Crown Court heard how the warehouseman lied when an 18-tonner driven by an unqualified and unlilensed driver reversed into him crushing him against a itationary truck.
"The size of the fine reflects the severity of the case Ind hopefully will act as a deterrent to businesses and imployers who fail to properly address the risks to health ind safety by the company," says Trevor Williams of Enfield bunch's Health and Safety Group; which brought the case gainst Leggett Freightways. This was a horrific case rhich could have been avoided if the company complied rith the regulations."
Leggett transport manager Chris Burrows says it was n unfortunate accident and the company has now impleiented a strict health and safety policy to ensure it never appens again. The firm now has a health and safety ispection every four weeks.
