Eivery year the Scenic] Transport Trust Awards recognise excellence in the restoration of elderly means of transport. The finals of the 1996/7 awards will be held next February; this year's first interim winners are a 1916 motor yacht, on 1860 carriage, a 1914 Rolls Royce—and this 1929 Ford Model A ambulance, appropriately dubbed Sympathy. It was first used by the Sidmouth branch of the St John Ambulance Brigade, was retired in 1948 and, as seems par for the course, was put to use as a chicken coop. Sympathy is now cherished by the St John's Clerkenwell, London HQ.
