Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Bosch's research director, Dr Otto Holzinger, has told Workshop in an exclusive interview that multiplexing will appear on trucks in the next two to three years.

The system, which replaces numerous cables with a single wire, is being actively pursued by all CV makers, says Holzinger.

At each end of the wire is a small computer which prioritises each signal and then attaches a code to it before passing it down the wire. At the other end another computer reads the code before stripping it off and directing the signal to the appropriate instrument: the single wire removes the problem of routing bundles of wires round and through the chassis.

While some sophisticated signal recognition and switching technology will have to be added to each piece of equipment using multiplexing, there are cost and weight savings to be made, claims Bosch.
