11 Jonathan Lawton demonstrates an interesting double-standard in his article "Telephone bookings" (CM 14-20 Feb). On the one hand he maintains that using a cab phone does not sufficiently distract the driver to impair him; yet on the other, he "doesn't listen to Radio 4, because becoming involved in a discussion causes his concentration to wander". Shades of the president who could not walk and chew gum simultaneously.
Lawton might give some thought to the problems of: El How to dial a 10-figure telephone number without distraction?
El How to deal with sometimes complex incoming information, or maybe an irate traffic manager?
If all else fails, I suggest that Lawton simply observes what happens to the standard of driving (sudden speed changes, lane swapping and so on) when the fellow in front is on the phone. Mike Evans, Tibbet and Britten Group, Enfield, Middx.
