PSV operators' licence has been granted by the South-eadtern raffic Commissioners for only 18 of the 21 vehicles operated by ilchers Coaches Ltd of Chatham because the commissioners were nhappy about the company's maintenance standards.
At a public sitting in Maid:one, evidence was given by 3hicle examiner W. J. Vinall mcerning inspections he cared out last January and Febiary, and produced a schedule suspension and advisory dect notices which had been imosed on the company's Mr Vinall said that although iaintenance facilities and staff ere adequate for the number of Micles being operated, a quesm-mark hung over the stanird of workmanship as some ?fects were of long standing. Director and company secrery Rowland Pitcher said that he usonally checked all inspec tion records and any suspension and defect notices, but he was not of a technical disposition and could not say whether the work itself had been carried out adequately.• Commissioners' chairman Randall Thornton said it appeared maintenance control standards were inadequate.
Granting the reduced licence until 1985, Mr Thornton said assurances had been given that the system would be tightened up and the company was being given the chance to prove it. The Commissioners felt the company could only cope with a total of 18 vehicles at present.
