Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

loaded or does a brokendown vehicle have to be offloaded before recovery? A It depends on the type of vehicle being used to recover the broken-down unit, A heavy locomotive (a vehicle not constructed to carry a load weighing over 11/ tons) or a light locomotive (a non-load-carrying vehicle weighing over 7i tons) may draw three trailers up to 40.650kg (a little over 40 tons) in weight under Section 65 of the Road Traffic Act 1972 and Regulation 77 of the Motor Vehicles (Con struction and Use) Regulations 1973. An articulated outfit would normally be classed as two trailers and the maximum gross weight is 32 tons, therefore if the recovery unit is a locomotive, the broken-down artic may be recovered loaded.

If the towing vehicle can be classified only as a motor tractor (a non-load carrying vehicle under 71 tons in weight) then this type of vehicle can draw two trailers only if they are both unloaded.

Normally, a motor car (up to 3 tons unladen weight) or a heavy motor car (in excess of 3 tons) may draw only one trailer, but Section 65 (4) of 1972 allows a broken-down articulated outfit to be regarded as one trailer provided it is unladen.
