Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A REPORT suggesting a gcw of 36 tonnes (35.6 tons) for artics has been approved by the truck and trailer technical committee of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

The basis of the report is a recommendation for an axle weight of 10.5 tonnes (10.3 tons) and a bogie weight of 20 tonnes (19.7 tons). If the suggestions are accepted the standard artic, be it fouror five-axle, would have a maximum gross weight of 36 tonnes.

The recommendation of the report would mean a revision of gross weights across the board, as shown in the table.

The five-axle artic combination category is sub-divided depending on whether a doubledrive bogie is specified. For a 6x2 the maximum weight is recommended at 36 tonnes with the equivalent 6x4 maximum of 42.0 tonnes (41.34 tons).

The report has been approv ed by the truck and trailer technical committee, but must also be approved by a higher body—the commercial vehicle technical board. This board will meet in around 10 days' time. If the recommendations are accepted, the report will go to the Department of the Environment.
