A MAJOR research study into the effect of the heavy goods vehicle on people—including drivers—is being launched in Britain by Mercedes-Benz (United Kingdom) Ltd. It will be direotly supervised by a doctor specialising in automotive medicine and will concentrate on three categories which have been shown by a pilot study to be of prime concern. They are : 0 Matters relating to the running, reliability and management of transport.
Driver comfort and safety. LI Road "pollution," particularly noise, vibration and visual disturbance.
Environmental protection and "anti-juggernaut groups" (in which women appear to be more active than men) are seen by Mercedes-Benz as the group most likely to influence future policy. The second most influential group, as determined by all respondents in the pilot study, were the drivers, their unions and fleet owners.
On driver comfort and safety, the study will use what is claimed to be a unique technique in monitoring visual awareness. With this system a signal is projected on to the windscreen, to which the driver responds. His response indicates any change in visual attentiveness, for example as a result of fatigue.
