TRADERS were urged by Mr. G. R. H. 1 Nugent. Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, on Monday, to provide loading bays. He said that motorways would do much good, but in nearly all cities the main traffic routes passed through the chief shopping centres. The balance had to be held between the conflicting interests of motorists, pedestrians and delivery vehicles. There was no simple answer, but kerb space must be rationed.
Mr: Nugent, who was speaking at the annual dinner of the Traders' Road Transport Association in London, said that £106m. of new road work would be authorized this year. The Government believed' that trade and industry would work best with maximum freedom for road transport. They were convinced that control of C-licensees would be harmful to the country.
Mr. S. C. Bond, president of the Association, said there was no place for an agonizing appraisal of transport, the freedom of which was essential to success.
Lord Teynham, president of the National Road Transport Federation, warned operators to be on their guard. The present Minister of Transport was, he added, the first to tackle the road problem and remain long enough to see a good start made.

Merseyside and North Wales Division have elected Mr. A. L. Bagley as chairman, Mr. E. W. Roberts, vice-chairman, and Mr. G. T. Pollard, treasurer.
