• BRS Northern has won a £125,000 three-year contract hire deal with furniture retailer Barker and Stonehouse. BRS will supply four Iveco Ford Cargo 0813s and provide maintenance support at its Thornaby, Gateshead and Darlington depots.

Tiphook's share

• Trailer and container rental group Tiphook has raised an extra £11.8 million through a share issue, representing 5% of its existing capital.

The money will be used to aid the company's expansion plans. Group financial director Roger Braidwood says: "Now we have established a network in Europe, we will be buying trailers, containers and railway wagons. We aim to add 3,000 to 4,000 new trailers and spend up to £120 million a year bolstering our fleet to go forward towards 1992."

Otis/Esso deal

• Faber Prest's subsidiary Otis Transport Services, has signed a contract with Esso Petroleum, to transport bitumen from its Plymouth tank farm and shipping centre, to quarries in Devon and Cornwall for roadbuilding. The deliveries are made by five Crane Fruehauf tankers pulled by Foden tractive units.

Steer goes alone

• Managers at tyre distribution company Steer Tyres have bought the firm from its parent Bardon Group. Operating in the East Midlands and East Anglia, the company now intends to expand its UK coverage.

Archbold Express

• Archbold Distribution, part of the Archbold Group, has launched a "Nationwide" express components distribution service aimed at the automotive industry.
