Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE eight-tonne jacking beam introduced by Laycock Engineering is designed for use on a lift or across a pit. It has two hydraulic rams which can be used together or independently.

Unloaded, the beam sits on sprung rollers which allows it to be wheeled easily to any position along its track. Once a load is applied the beam settles onto the track and is completely rigid.

Because the beam's twin cross-members telescope into one another, the unit can be adjusted to suit different widths of pit or lift truck. Once adjusted for width the telescope action is locked by a set screw. The rams fit in the space between cross-members and, being connected by fiexible hoses, can be positioned to suit lifting points on different vehicles. Should one ram need to be positioned astride the ends of the outer crossmembers, saddles are provided to ensure the ram plate sits level.

Maximum travel on each ram is 152mm (61n), but additional height can be achieved with the ram extensions supplied. Two types of support pad are included, flat and with a V, catering for most applications. Screwed rings lock the rams once the required height has been reached.

Hydraulic pressure is raised by a lever-operated doubleacting pump, and a built-in valve limits the load on each ram to four tonnes. Ram selection and balancing (to compensate for uneven loading) is achieved with two control valves. A capstan valve gives very fine control over the rate of descent, ensuring complete safety during lowering.

Maintenance is limited to checking hydraulic fluid, cleaning the filter and lubricating moving parts such as rollers, pump linkages and locking rings.
