CARLANN FIIL has style and subtlety. Where others might defy bailiffs with barricades, she opened the door to them. She resisted their attempts to take over the premises in London's Limehouse in which she and her husband, John, had operated a transport business for 16 years, by the simple expedient of gluing herself to the stairs.
The bailiffs were acting on a compulsory purchase order granted to London Regional Transport, which needed the premises for its Dockland light railway. The amount of compensation was in dispute and Mrs Fiil "a very stubborn woman," said her husband was sticking to her guns as well as the stairs.
The female of the species is more deadly than the rail.
