Bullock-cart operators in the Far East will be gratified to learn that "certain neo-cryptoprotectionist trends evident in Europe" will not taint their "dynamic and expanding profession." They can now take the nails out of their whip-ends.
This encouraging news comes from the International Road Transport Union (IRU), which recently held a joint meeting in Bankok with representatives of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP-UN).
This organisation has dedicated the decade from 1985-1994 to improving road transport efficiency and 150 delegates from 16 countries, representing road transport operators, governments and important world bodies, adopted 15 resolutions on how to do it, Ratification of the TIR Convention is one of them. For a start, though, some proper roads would not come amiss.
