PEUGEOT Talbot's new 205 hatchback van, previewed exclusively in CM last September, made its first UK appearance at last week's Fleet News Motor Show, and will be available in Britain from the end of May.

The front-wheel-drive 2.4m (7ft 11in) wheelbase van is based on the Peugeot 205 three-door hatchback car body shell, and will be sold with either a 37kW (50hp) 1,124cc petrol or a 45kW (60hp) 1,769cc indirect injection diesel engine.

Two trim levels standard and GL will be offered on diesel and petrol-engined models.

Standard trim vans are fitted with a four-speed gearbox and vinyl upholstery, while GL variants have a five-speed gearbox, cloth covered seats, a heated rear windscreen, tailgate wash/wipe and driver's door pockets.

Both versions have a laminated windscreen fitted as standard as well as a carpeted driving compartment, vinyl floor covering in the load compartment and a half-height load restraint barrier.

GL petrol vans have a payload of 410kg (8,07cwt) and 395kg (7.78cwt) on the diesel GL variants.

All vans have the same maximum load volume of 1.18cum (42.4cu ft), and are fitted with a 50 lit (11gal) fuel tank.

All models have front disc and rear drum brakes. Kerb-tokerb turning circle is 9.93m (32ft 7in).

Prices have yet to be released for the vans, which will be sold with a six-year anti corrosion warranty.

Discussions are currently in progress within Peugeot Talbot and could lead to all Peugeot vehicles sold in the UK being rebadged as Talbots to give them a stronger UK identity.
