MORE THAN 150 pictures accompany the text in this booklet tracing the history of Bedford goods vehicles and published by Vauxhall in recognition of the make's threemillion production milestone last October.
Contrary to a popular belief, the first Bedford was not a Chevrolet under another name. There were distinct similarities between Bedford and Chevrolet, especially in looks. But the rear wheels and axles, and the pressure lubricating system for big-end bearings, were distinctly different, and by the end of 1931, when Vauxhall ventured into the commercial vehicle market, Bedford had ousted the 12cwt and 30cwt Chevrolets from the Luton assembly lines.
Special sections are devoted to war-time Bedfords and to the make's world markets — nearly 50 per cent of the three million vehicles have been exported. A section on oddities (see picture this page) recalls some strange bodywork and unusual applications over the years.
The title of the booklet is the advertising slogan, first used in 1934, which appeared regularly till the mid-Sixties. J.F.D.
