Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

/ne who will not rejoice at his news is H. Wilkinson, of he Preston branch of the "ransport Salaried Staff 1ssociation. In a letter to the kssociation's journal, he rounces the NFC for the 'extreme lengths" to which, le alleges, they "have been irepared to go to achieve irofitability in their former Iritish Rail companies at the mpense of the rates of pay ind conditions of their ;tiffs."

He was automatically :ransferred from the railway /undries division to National :arriers under the Transport Ict, 1968. in 1976, "sadder and perhaps wiser," he accepted redundancy from his management position and later returned to the railways as a new-entrant clerk. Perhaps he should have waited.

The question of parity between National Carriers and railway staff grades is complicated but no longer relevant. National Carriers are in the road transport industry, to which their rates of pay must be geared. In any event, I understand, National Carriers' grades are generally higher than those in the railways and direct comparison can be misleading.
