THE ROAD Haulage Association has expressed concern about the news from oil companies that there will be a 1520 per cent reduction in the amount of diesel fuel available to hauliers.
RHA secretary Eric Russell has written to the Department of Energy pointing out possible consequences of the cutback.
The hauliers' ability to serve customers would be restricted and they may have to consider laying off drivers and curtailing use of vehicles, says the RHA.
In the letter Mr Russell recognises that the reduction in diesel fuel is a direct result of the Iranian situation, but hoped the Government would bear in mind the "heavy dependence" of trade and industry on road haulage.
The Department of Energy, in its reply to the RHA's letter, said it was consulting the oil companies and other appropriate bodies about any response to the world oil position.
The Department did say that unless Iranian oil supplies are resumed there will inevitably be difficulty in meeting consumer demand for oil in full.
