• Work began yesterday on a £500,000 lorry park at Carlisle — one of the worst black spots identified in a government report on the hazards of over-night street parking, a year ago.

The 11-acre site — acquired by Vanguard Interstop Parking Ltd and being built by John Laing Construction Ltd — will be the first "transportel" in the north. The first in Britain was opened at Felixstowe last Thursday (CM February 23).

Over-night accommodation for drivers of a maximum of 225 vehicles, will be housed in a purpose-built 24-hour catering and amenity block, operated by Centre Hotels (Cranston) Ltd. British Petroleum will provide refuelling, lubricating and vehicle washing facilities.

The park, on Carlisle's Kingstown Industrial Estate near the M6/A7/A74 interchange, should be completed by August. This is another in the programme to build 50 safe lorry parks envisaged by the DoE, for which grants have been made available.

Vanguard is at present negotiating a lease for another park based in Hull's King George Dock area. Work should start in April.

A 50 per cent holding has been acquired in Vanguard Interstop by London and County (A and D).
