• Police investigating alleged fraud which netted up to £750,000 from unwitting hauliers have made five arrests and are planning to make more.
The arrests, after a nine month investigation by the West Yorks Fraud Squad, were in Brighton, East Sussex; Suffolk and Wakefield and Pontefract, West Yorks.
The five have been questioned and put on police bail. They have not been charged but face further interviews.
They have been questioned about two Leeds freight forwarders, South Elmsall-based Allied Imports and Akcent Europa from the Leeds and Stourton Container Base.
Fraud Squad staff are investigating allegations that the freight forwarders ran up total debts with international hauliers of up to £750,000, although they had been paid by customers. Staff from both companies appeared to have vanished over the summer.
The investigation began when UK and international hauliers complained they were owed money by the two companies. French-owned Norbert Dentressangle is owed the most—a total of £75,000.
