• Truck thieves are becoming increasingly skilled at targeting high value loads, according to national statistics released by Essex police.

In the first quarter of 1 994 there were fewer thefts of loads from trucks compared with the same period of 1993. The number of thefts From warehouses rose slightly, but the value of goods stolen increased from 27.1m to 211.7m.

Many high-value loads are being targeted on the roads. There were 31 hijacks throughout the UK in the first quarter of this year, compared with 40 for the whole of 1993. Nearly all the attacks were on general haulage drivers.

The Essex and Met police areas bore the brunt of the 139 lorry load and 78 warehouse thefts which were reported in the first quarter. The Metropolitan police investigated 38 lorry load thefts and 10 raids on warehouses; Essex handled 28 and 27 thefts cases respectively.
