Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

your recent Sound Off heading was in connection with an operator who purchased a Sc,ania used vehicle (CM5-11 May), only to discover later that the vehicle in question was a previous insurance write-off.

As we retail many used

vehicles and importantly— must emphasise we are not involved in this case, we agree with the operator that the establishment of a compulsory central register detailing the financial history of commercial vehicles would benefit all parties.

Vehicles are written off by insurance companies not necessarily due to safety conditions, but generally through economical reasons

relating to the value of the vehicle versus cost of repair. These vehicles do sometimes find their way back on to the market and a customer should have knowledge of this before purchase. We try to check the history of our used vehicles, both through the manufacturer and II:PI checks.

Any system introduced to establish a vehicle's history can only help to give confidence to customers in a much maligned service— good used vehicle provision. Mike Ellithorn Managing director Scantruck, Pudieet, Essex.
