ALTHOUGH TO Sir Peter Thompson, head of the National Freight Consortium, the parcels business is a jungle, Lex Wilkinson last year managed to hack through the undergrowth to beat the rate-cutters (who, the company's Jeeves-like annual report says, "discounted heavily in attempting to fill substantial spare capacity") and increase its profit.
The well-patronised Nightline next-day delivery service started nationally early last year failed to meet its deadline with only 0.04 per cent of parcels. On other services, where competition was toughest, delivery time averaged 2.4 days.
