Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

LAND ROVER has introduced a number of improvements to its Range Rover models. Modifications include the use of electronic ignition, a new facia and instrument console, reclining front seats and improved heating and ventilation. BILL BROCK reports.

The top-of-the-range model is called the Vogue and is fitted as standard with items which are offered as options on other models.

These include electrically operated windows and door mirrors (heated), a four-speaker stereo system, luggage compartment cover and a tailgate-operated courtesy light. Also available are automatic transmission, air conditioning, a towing pack and heavy duty battery. Interior trim comes in a choice of five colours.

The positions of switches and gauges have been revised and a grab handle provided for the front seat passenger. Heater performance has been boosted and is now ducted to the rear passenger compartment on four door models.

The front door windows on both two and four door models are now one-piece to improve the driver's field of vision and help reduce wind noise. Restyled exterior mirrors also help in this area.

An over-centre action to the tailgate's gas filled struts makes the upper section easier to open and close. Last year Range Rover registrations in the UK reached 2,991, an all time high. Some 12,000 units were sold world wide with improved penetration into European markets.

On a very wet day last month, drove the improved model through the lanes surrounding Eastnor Castle close to the Welsh border. The 3.5 litre V8 engine has lost none of its smoothness or flexibility. Wind noise has been reduced, but the ventilation system fails to clear misting of the front screen directly in front of the driver. This appears to be caused by the influence of the fascia-mounted instrument binnacle mounted close to an air vent.

Off road performance and comfort is impressive. The long coil spring suspension, which when driven quickly through bends allows a little too much roll, irons out the worst of the bumps off road. The seats which now permit angular adjustment at the squab as well as the back rest provide good comfort and support.

The prices of the new Range Rover models are as follows: Range Rover two-door £12,080 (£15,050 including car tax and vat); Range Rover four-door £12,820 (£15,972 including car tax and vat); Range Rover Vogue £14,030 (£17,479 including car tax and vat).

Land Rover has also been busy applying One Ten-like modifications to its short wheelbase Land Rover models. More news on the Land Rover Ninety will be in next week's CM.
