Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A N illustration of the latest all.M.steel S-ton timber carriage, made by Taskers, of Andover (1932), Ltd., Andover, Hants, appeared in our issue dated May 5, but pressure of space prevented us from including an explanation of its construction.

The main member of this trailer is a 6-in, solid drawn-steel tube. The forecarriage is built from channel-steel members, gusseted and riveted, the steering portion being strongly braced by an X-shaped cross-member, at the centre of which is the lower bearing for the main pin. This pin has its upper bearing welded into the main tube member.

The rear carriage, the position of which can be altered to vary the wheelbase, is free to revolve around the main tube, the advantage being that distortion is avoided. The channel-steel bolsters are of full • width and give ample wheel clearance.

With regard to the axles, these are turned from square-sectioned steel of 50-55 tons tensile strength, and have Timken roller bearings carrying caststeel hubs. The wheels have 38-in. by 9-in.. single high-pressure tyres. En

closed, expanding brakes of 18 ins. diameter are fitted to all Wheels, the brake levers and spindles being splined to provide adjustment. The front and rear brakes are arranged to be oper-• nted together from a lever on the towing vehicle or tractor, whilst the rear brakes can be operated, also, by a hand screw at the rear„ of the carriage. Heavy semi-elliptic springs are employed and are secured at their bushed ends by large-diameter shackle pins. The standard drawbar is of rigid, triangular pattern. Lubrication to all bearing surfaces is by grease nipples.
