Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The authority, circulation and influence of this journal rest upon facts.

Several usual features are unavoidably held aver, owing to pressure upon our space in connection with the Parade report and illustrations.

Manchester Show Results.

There was a profit of 1:996 on the 1910 show at Manchester, and the District Association now has cash resources of £.2,195. With the augmented strength due to the co-operation of the S.M.M.T., the 1911 show or shows may produce a profit of £5,000! As these shows have always been " by the trade for the trade,"

and as they will so continue, nobody can grudge the favourable balances. Shareholders get a dividend of 25 per cent. on the paid-up capital, and exhibitor-shareholders also get a rebate of 25 per cent, on the cost of space in February last.

Williams and Co., of Matlock Bath. Its use greatly improves the collection and delivery facilities for Bakewell, Parley Dale and other points. One horse-cart and one mounted postman are replaced.

A Statue to Dunlop.

We are interested to see that the claims of Mr. R. W. Thomson, of Edinburgh, the father of Mr. Courtauld Thomson and of Mr. H. Thomson Lyon, are now being strongly advocated. We believe that this journal, in its issue of the 17th February last, was the first to direct attention to the unintentional injustice which might result from the well-meant action of those who desire to do honour to Dunlop. Correspondence on the matter has been appearing in " The Scotsman," and this has been quoted in many London journals.

"Karrier-Car " Sales.

A roomy " Karrier-Car " van, sold by Clayton and Co. (Huddersfield), Ltd., to J. E. Bentley and Co., Ltd., cloth dyers and finishers, of Dunkirk, Halifax, is doing excellent work on the particularly-hilly roads in the neighbourhood of that Yorkshire manufacturing centre.

In South Africa.

A correspondent, who signs his letter " E.W.S.," reverts to his earlier articles (issues of the 11th and 18th November) re motor transport in South Africa, ilpropos our last week's references to the views of the Minister for Agriculture for Natal, the Hon. W. A. Deane. In this connection, we reproduce several interesting photographs on page .287. Commercial Car Hirers, Ltd., of Cambridge Circus, W.C., is booking many orders for service at manoeuvres during the next few months.

The output of the Coventry Chain Co.'s works is stated to exceed five chains per minute, which is equivalent to one-and-a-half million pieces per day.

Hans Renold Chains.

At the Japan-British Exhibition, opposite the stand of Dobson and Barlow, Ltd., in the Machinery Hall, a fine display of Renal chains attracts much notice. Views in the Didsbury and Manchester factories are also shown, whilst an eight-page pamphlet, which is printed in English, French and German, admirably conveys muc-h useful information about the chains and their many applications.

R.A.S.E.

Manufacturers nod others who intend to exhibit at the forthcoming -Royal Show are well advanced with their arrangements. The representative of this journal who attended the Press view and luncheon, at Liverpool, on Saturday last, thinks that the height of the shedding will require to he increased in future years, if typical motorvans for big loads are to be accommodated. Mr. Mellow will no doubt take a note of the suggestion.

A New Foolproof Chassis.

We hare been supplied by Plenty and Son, Ltd., of the Eagle Iron Works, Newbury, with some particulars of a now type of motorvan, which Las been produced throughout in that maker's works. The two chief claims made on behalf of this model are that it is practically foolproof, and that it can be sold at a low price, e.g., C225. The general appearance of the " Newbury " chassis, as it is to be called, is -evident from the photograph which we reproduce on this page. The engine is -of the two-cylinder vertical pattern placed across the ehassis and under the

driver's seat. The drive is transmitted to a two-speed-and-reverse epicyclic gearbox by means of a Renold

silent chain, and thence to the road wheels by roller chains. Haulage in Dundee.

The North British Industrial Motor Co., whose manager is Mr. R. Hynd Ferrier, has Belhaven chassis on order with a view to the !undertaking of motor haulage in the Dundee district. High sides are being fitted to the bodies, to render them particularly suitable for the conveyance of jute. The company's address is 166-8, Seagate, Dundee, and it will also institute chars-k-bancs services.

Fire,-Brigade Matters.

Another 40 h.p. standard Dennis fire-engine, with 3.50-gallon DennisGwynne turbine pump, is illustrated on page 290.

We learn from Chief Officer England, of the Bath Brigade, that he considers the recent overturning of the Council's engine was in no way attributable to any instability of the machine.

Beckenham U.D.C. has resolved to adjourn the question of purchasing additional self-propelled fire equip. merit until the beginning of September. A report is to be prepared by the Council's Surveyor for presentation three months hence. Our Berlin correspondent writes :— " On the occasion of the Danube Week, a motor-boat run, organized by the Motor Yacht Club of Germany, and an Austrian yachting club, the Austrian military Daimler lorries and trailers were all placed at the disposal of the yachtsmen and their ladies for sight-seeing purposes. I forward a photograph of a party on board."
