• Four out of five of the 38,000 trucks using London Lorry Ban exemption permits will have air brake silencers fitted by autumn next year, pre
dicts the chief of the capital's lorry control unit.
This compares with only 30% in 1989, when the trade associations began their doomed bid to have compulsory air brake silencers outlawed. The reintroduction of Condition 11 was finally granted last October.
Unit director John Hale will tell members of the London Boroughs Transport Committee tomorrow (Friday) that the condition will make "a fully effective contribution to the reduction of the impact of heavy good vehicles on London's environment".
