Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Your "Wider repfers" story (CM, 18-25 June) says that EC Directive 85/3 "sets a maximum limit of 2.5m for all HGVs".

This is wrong. It would be more accurate to call the limit a minimum, for the Directive does not say that vehicles may not exceed certain specific weights and dimensions. It simply forbids EC countries from excluding vehicles from other Community countries which are within those limits.

It explicitly allows countries to adopt higher weights and greater dimensions if they choose to. As you point out, Britain already allows wider reefers; so do many other countries.

This is perfectly legal. The Directive's limits are a floor, not a ceiling.
