• The decision by National Freight Consortium International Holdings (USA) to withdraw from the purchase of Four Winds (Commercial Motor last week), was prompted by an investigation into Four Winds' services by the Board of Military Traffic Management Command in the States.
Much of Four Winds' business involves the movement of the household goods of American servicemen, and there has been recent concern about the company's service levels, and about instances when the company has failed to pay agents and shippers.
When NFC first announced its intention to purchase Four Winds, the Board of Military Traffic Management Command announced it would continue to work with Four Winds, which operates a major van moving business from its HQ in San Diego, California, under one year's probation, during which Four Winds would be expected to improve its performance.
Now that NFC has withdrawn from the purchase, the Board is reconsidering its decision to continue to work with Four Winds on a one-year probationary basis. Muriel Craddock from NFC says the company is still seeking to acquire a removals company in the United States.
LI NFC is expanding its operational premises with over 23 million worth of building projects under construction.
A new palletised warehouse is being built for Pickfords Removals at Horsham, new workshops for BRS Western and Southern at Cardiff and Watford respectively and an extension at Gloucester is planned. At Oxford new warehousing is under construction for BRS Western.
Other schemes include a major warehouse in Manchester for BRS Northern to serve Kelloggs, an improved and extended drive-through vehicle parts distribution depot in Birmingham for Ford and a warehouse in Peterborough for NFC Contract Distribution and Batchelor Foods.
