• After nearly four years of wrangling between the United States Department of Transportation and interested parties concerned with heavy vehicle operation, the plans for a safety standard on rear underrun bumpers have been abandoned. A notice proposing a standard of "underride protection" applicable to trucks and trailers was published in October 1967; after prolonged consultations amended standards were published in March 1969 and August 1970.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now states that it concludes "that at the present time, the safety benefits achievable in terms of fives and injuries saved would not be commensurate with the cost of implementing the proposed requirements".
