• St Andrews district council in Fife has paid a subsidy of £45 to keep a rural Sunday bus service between Largo and St Andrews, the takings from which were only £5.39 over a period of five weeks. The experiment will continue over the summer months and costs will be considered thereafter.
Dumfriesshire is to subsidize 32 rural services at a cost of £56.521, on which a grant of £28,260 will be available. The county council had previously refused to subsidize, but has now been virtually compelled to do so. on receiving positive indication that the Government would not intervene.
Meanwhile. Sutherland county council is to meet bus operators to discuss the position in that county; Highland Omnibuses Ltd has initiated moves to have services reduced or eliminated unless marked improvement in earnings is shown, and this has been considered by the council. The net result was a decision to discuss with all operators the future of public transport in the area.
W. Alexander and Sons (Northern) Ltd has made a similar approach to Fraserburgh town council and this will be discussed at a future meeting.
