Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Stockport, one of the largest towns within the framework of SELNEC PTA, has decided to send written objection to the Traffic Commissioners regarding proposed fare increases which it is claimed will add as much as 50 per cent to some routes in the area.

A public sitting to consider the application to raise the fares will be held in August and it is expected that Stockport will send representatives The proposed increases, which for this town would be the third within a year, are, according to a SELNEC spokesman, the result of wage settlements and increased charges for fuel and tyres. They include an increase from 4p to 6p on journeys between 2 and 2+ miles and the current 3p cheap period fare for the same run will be increased to 5p.

Members of the transport committee have said that they are concerned mainly with the increase in the two-mile journey which is the average for most people in the town. The Trans-Lancs Express service between Bolton and Stockport is also likely to be affected, with increases in fares up to 5p, When Stockport council meets later this month a full debate Over the fare increases is expected as the Corporation is at present pressing for control of public passenger transport in the town to be returned to it.

The charge of 25p for concessionary fares passes introduced by SELNEC PTE will not in future have to be paid by pensioners living in Stockport. This has been decided by the town's policy committee following a request by the local Trades Council that the charge should be removed. They ask that the matter be given priority in view of the deteriorating position of pensioners. The committee recommended that the charge be dropped and this will come into effect after the next meeting of the council.
