• MPs "will not be disappointed" with the suggestions for help for rural and semi-rural areas in the Government surveys on public transport in Devon and West Suffolk, prophesied Mr Eldon Griffiths, Under-Secretary for the Environment, in the Commons.
He said that the Minister, Mr Peter Walker, hoped to publish both surveys before long.
Mr Griffiths was speaking during a discussion on rural transport, started off by Mr Daniel Awdray (Tory, Chippenham), who suggested that the rate support grant should be cut for local authorities which failed to provide grants for their unremunerative rural bus services.
Turning down this request, Mr Griffiths emphasized that Mr Walker was anxious that these grant powers should be widely exploited.
The Government's share of the grant was made available with the minimum red tape and form-filling, pointed out Mr Griffiths, and the Section 34 grant could be made available not only to existing bus services but also to private operators running minibuses and, where appropriate, even to taxis and private cars.
