• A bottleneck since it was built in 1940, the roundabout at Scotch Corner, Al, is about to disappear. On July 19 the chairman of the North Riding county council highways committee, Maj F. W. Chadwick, will officially open a reconstructed road system that involves a new dual-carriageway to the east of Al and a two-level interchange with A66 trunk road and the main A6136. The work, which was begun in June 1970, has cost £574,000 and has been supervised by the county council.
In 1940 some 4500 vehicles passed Scotch Corner daily; latest figure is nearly 34,000.
