• The TGWU commercial services secretary for the Birmingham district, Mr Alan Law, has told. 100 West Midlands transport operators that he is not prepared to renew the year-old agreement under which, he says, a lack of wage claims and the enjoyment of "99 per cent industrial peace" had been obtained by operators in return for pay increments.
The union had asked for a £2.50 a week supplement for hgv licence holders, an increase in the basic rate and a rise in the overnight subsistence allowance to £2 from the general average of £1.50, The employers have, it is understood, offered £2 on the basic rate and 25p on the average subsistence allowance.
Saying that his committee could not accept this, which would bind his members until August 1972, Mr Law said the union would back any members who took action because a company would not negotiate. Shop stewards would now be free to negotiate wages and conditions individually with transport firms and there would be a return to the old leap-frogging of pay claims.
The' existing agreement covers about 3000 drivers.
