Felixstowe

'J THE article on the port of Felixstowe in your issue of 'HE 25 was extremely interesting. Without wishing to take credit from the organizations mentioned, no reference to efforts for improvement of road communications in East Anglia is complete which omits mention of the unceasing personal efforts of Mr. Harry Chandler, of Fisons Ltd.

Knowledgeable as he is of dock requirements on the one hand and inland communications on the other, he is amongst the foremost in recognizing the need for all authorities to unite in producing an agreed policy for the whole of the area. He takes every opportunity of emphasizing this need, whether it be through the TRTA, the Ipswich Chamber of Commerce or any other avenue open to him.

He is probably right in his assessment that East Anglia offers an opportunity of planning which is unique in this country, in that there are exceptional opportunities to start so much from scratch. As he so often says, God forbid that we should again allow piecemeal development which has made such a hideous mess of south-east England. London, WI. R. E. G. BROWN, Secretary, London and Home Counties Division, TRTA.

[We are happy to print this tribute to Mr. Chandler's efforts. It was not possible to mention all the people and companies who have contributed to this development.—ED.1

Efficiency was the real message

FIRST of all, let me congratulate you for a courageous and outspoken editorial last week; it reflected very well the opinion of a number of hauliers. But the vital message from Mr. Aubrey Jones was obscured by the rates schemozzle—haulage lacks efficiency. Keep plugging away at this theme in The Comn'tercial Motor, because it was Mr. Jones' real message. I, in turn, will make my drivers read what you write.

London, E.C.l.
