Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DISPLAYED at the recent Essex Show was this outfit of 20 tons payload and 32 Cu. yd. capacity. Hauled by a Guy Invincible, the semi-trailer is built by Hoynor Ltd., of Danbury, and this frameless aluminium alloy dump unit is tipped by an LI8FT trailer hoist made by Autolifts and Engineering Co. Ltd., of Blackburn.

Marketed by Hoynor—in designs and capacities to suit operators' requirements—it can have a p.t.-o.-driven hydraulic pompon the tractive unit or an independent petrol engine driving a pump mounted on the fifth wheel.

A 26-TON GROSS TIPPER

N TER E D by 1-41-ioveringham Gravels Ltd., Nottingham, the heaviest vehicle to take part in the recent Leicester eliminating contest of the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition, was this 26-tongross tipper based on a Foden chassis, which is equipped with a Neville aluminium body having a capacity of 15.6 Cu. yd.

An Edbro 6 CAN twin ram front mounted gear is used to tip the body, which has a length of 22 ft. 6 in. and is based on U-section members. WI-IEN Mr. Oliver Hart, of Rollon Vlf Transport Ltd., Little Eaton, Derbyshire, visited California some years ago, he was shown a Villiers articulated tipper discharging a load of 30 tons, and at the first opportunity he ordered a Villierstype semi-trailer tipper from Neville Industries (Mansfield) Ltd., of Mansfield. Completed a week ago, the vehicle is the first Neville-Villiers tipper to go into service in this country and is hauled by 'a Leyland Super Beaver bonneted tractive unit, built from parts to the maker's specification (with a wheelbase lengthened by 3 in.) by Mr. Hart's father, of Oliver Hart and Sons Ltd., Coppull, Lanes.

The total cost of the outfit was £6,200 and it has a payload of 19 to 19+ tons, whereas a typical eight-wheeled rigid tipper costs 15,700 and can carry a maximum payload of only 141 tons. Moreover, the articulated outfit is far more stable when tipping than an eight-wheeler and handles well on the road, the forward-mounted engine and location of the York Big D fifth-wheel coupling at least 17 in. ahead of the single driving axle giving a favourable weight distribution. Fully laden, the two trailer axles and the coupling are each loaded to

9 tons. Unladen weight of the outfit is 10 tons 7 cwt., of which the trailer accounts for 4 tons 15 cwt., whilst the overall length is slightly less than 40 ft, Distance between the outer axles measures 34 ft. 6 in.

Located on the centre line of the coupling, an Edbro 6SC/six-extension single-ram gear is used to lift the front of the trailer a sufficient height to tip the 28 ft. 6 in. drop-sided aluminium body through an angle of over 50 degrees; the trailer is guided and stabilized by robust tubular radial arms which are joined to form an open frame and carry Intertruck manually operated landing
