On the vexed question of whether the liner train guard should travel at the rear of the locomotive or in a rear brakevan, BRB and the NUR have discussed a compromise. This, which is likely to be accepted, is that the guard should have a compartment in a converted container. Such a conversion, complete with table and chair, was on show last week at Maiden Lane, the London terminal for the liner trains.
It still leaves the second, and more serious, objection—allowing free access to the terminals to private road hauliers. No progress was made on this issue, but clearly the union was asked to modify its views in return for the other concession. It will be taken up again after the NUR conference which opened at Southport this week.
