Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE first of five new Gardner-engined Fodens with Dempster Dumpmaster refuse disposal bodies was handed over to the new London Authority of Waltham Forest recently. (Waltham Forest comprises the former boroughs of Walthamstow, Chingford and Leyton.)

The Powell Duffryn-built Dumpmasters have a capacity of 38 cu. yd., and Mr. J. R. Homer, the cleansing superintendent and transport manager of the new borough, expects that a good 10 tons dead weight of ram-compressed refuse will be carried.

The vehicles were ordered in late 1963. Deliveries of the outstanding Dumpmasters should be completed within the next two or three months, and they are certain to be kept busy when they arrive.

Refuse disposal in large conurbations presents ever greater difficulties. Waltham Forest rubbish is tipped at South Ockenden, in Essex, rather more than 20 miles away. When crews are trained, Mr. Bonser hopes the Dumpmasters will do three or perhaps four round trips per day.

A specially designed canvas top, built by Bonallack, which rolls up neatly A28 above the driver's cab, is a feature of the new equipment, and this should prevent any tendency for dust or small items of refuse to escape from the fully loaded vehicles.

Great care has been taken over the rust-proofing and finishing of the Dumpmasters. The chassis of the first vehicle was fully shot blasted (by the Barking Shot Blasting Company) and a subsidiary of this firm was respon

sible f or the painting, to the specification laid down by the Waltham Forest Authority.

Waltham Forest cleansing department drivers are to undergo a few days' training in the 11Se of the Dumpmasters by

Powell Duffryn staff.

The Walthamstow Motor Co. Ltd. (a company of the Frank G. Gates Ltd. Group) successfully tendered for the supply of the vehicles, in face of considerable competition from distributors and others over a wide area.
