for public service vehicle drivers and conductors was advocated by Major F. S. Eastwood, Yorkshire Licensing Authority, when he distributed the prizes after this year's final of the National Road Transport Ambulance Association's competition at Huddersfield. last Sunday.
Six teams, all from municipal undertakings, competed in the final. The Coventry team (232 points) gained the premier award, the Stirk Trophy. Nottingham won second prize (216 points), and Cardiff third prize (198 points). Other scores were: Leicester. 190; Preston, 167; Manchester, 152.
At the prize distribution, under the presidency of Mr. IL A. Bennie Gray, chairman of Huddersfield Passenger Transport Committee, Major Eastwood said: " In the Traffic Act there are no
first-aid qualifications stipulated for public service vehicle drivers or conductors. Personally, I would like to see such qualifications laid down. If that is impossible, I would like to see arrangements whereby after 12 months' service, everyone would have qualified through some sort of proficiency test in first-aid.
" At the same time, I consider there should be some reward for this qualification, either by way of a grant of additional pay or—as I believe applies in the case of some undertakings— priority in the matter of promotion.
As the presidency passes to the manager of the undertaking whose team wins the competition, Mr. H. Muscroft, of Huddersfield, handed over this office to Mr, R. A. Fearnley, of Coventry There are now 32 undertakings affiliated to the Association, seven haying joined in the past 12 months.
