MINISTRY TO MAKE THE ROADS SAFE.

The Ministry of Transport proposes to make all roads safe. Every defect capable of remedy must be cured.

. This announcement was made by Mr. E. Leslie Burgin, Minister of Transport, at a luncheon given to him by the Scottish C.M.U.A., in Edinburgh, last week. He stressed the point that the safety probleni was common to all, and deplored " class war " among road users. He advocated the encouragement of a higher standard of care on the road, rather than punishment.

" If pedestrians," he said, " do not use recognized crossings or observe the general code of the road, their faults must be brought home to them." A careful watch on all classes of road user was, Mr. Burgin added, being kept.

He wished to be an accessible Minister, and he invited road users, through the proper channels, to submit their difficulties, with the necessary evidence, to him.

Mr. Burgin was welcomed by Sir John McDonald, J.P., president of the Scottish C.M.U.A. Many well-known personalities in the transport world attended.

Deputation on Licensing Procedure.

A deputation from the B.R.F. and the Parliamentary Road Group waited on the Minister of Transport at.the House of Commons, yesterday (Thursday), with proposals for an alteration in the law relating to the procedure of

licensing courts. An amendment to the Road and Rail Traffic Act, 1933, was put forward.

A.R.O. National Council Completed.

Elections to the National Council of A.R.O. have now been completed; In addition to the list of members published in last week's issue, the following have now been appointed to serve on the council:—Major E. C. Thomas, Mr. S. S. Robson and Mr. C. Word en .

A strong Yorkshire Area contingent, comprising some 60 members, will be present at A.R.O. annual luncheon, in London, next Monday. The Yorkshire Area representatives will be drawn from Hull, Bridlington, Scarborough, Mahon, York, Selby, Goole, Leeds, Sheffield, Doncaster, Wombwell, Chesterfield and other places.
