• -ti-Number, dated February 19th, showed, Leigh Corporation was at that time operating 12 Straker-Squire 32seaters, 11 Leylands which ranged from 28-seaters to 32-seaters, and three A.E.C. 32-seater vehicles, and itis interesting to observe from the recently issued report of the authorities that these buses have given highly satisfactory service during the financial year ended March 31st last.
The corporation buses covered 628,771 bus-miles, whilst those of the Lanes United Tramways0Co. covered 257,902 bus-miles, making a total of 886,673. In the purchase of the 137,293 gallons of fuel which were consumed during the year the expenditure of 15,948 was involved. The debit side of the revenue account shows that traffic expenses amounted to £17„,832, whilst maintenance and repairs cost £4,502. To this figure must be added the general expenses, which totalled £1,830, whilst, in addition to this, there was a further expenditure on management of £1,927. Bank interest, income tax, interest on mortgages and sinking-fund contributions absorbed £5,996.
These figures are offset by a revenue of £32,349, which was derived from the ordinary services, whilst that recorded for the joint services amounted to £10,380, the total of which is equal to 11.56d. per bus-mile. Revenue from other sources increased the sum to £44.779, the equivalent per bus-mile of which is 12.12d., which is good considering the moderate size of the fleet.
After accounting for some of the money in the various accounts—appropriation,' depreciation and renewals accounts, etc.—the net profit on the Year'S working is recorded at the satisfactory figure of 16,830, i.e., 1.85cl. per bus-mile.
