MOST CV operators believe September's Driver CPC deadline will lead to a driver shortage this autumn, according to exclusive research conducted for CMon behalf of Texaco Lubricants.

A survey of 500 CV operators, contained within the newly available CV industry Report 2014, found 59% agreed that "Driver CPC will lead to a driver shortage': The view is consistent, irrespective of fleet size, although those with the largest operations (more than 51 vehicles) were most concerned, with 61% agreeing.

Data from the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), published last month, shows 291,421 professional drivers (PCV and LGV) have completed the mandatory 35-hours of periodic training ahead of the 10 September 2014 deadline. This compares with 273,897 in October.

It means that as of November, 689,664 drivers were engaged in the training process (680,175 in October). However, based on DSA's own estimate, as many as 60,336 drivers

have yet to start their training.

Within our sample, 6% of firms said their drivers had done nothing to meet the deadline, despite it being less than a year away. If this is representative of the wider road transport industry about 25,000 drivers are yet to begin training, equivalent to 125,000 training days.
