75 years ago ro January 1928 CM appeared to have a mini campaign of its own, with a call for "preferential taxation of the heavier classes of commercial vehicle equipped with pneumatic tyres". This came after an investigation into the effects of the different types of tyre on the country's roads.

Liverpool docks was the focus of attention, after installing a system of radio-van dock patrols to help ease delays which had made the proud port infamous amongst hauliers.

CM said that, despite years of research into the problem, there was still insufficient communication between those responsible for the various processes of transport—from dispatch at the manufacturers to arrival at the docks by ship.

These "modem radio-aided progress chasers," it claimed, would do much to assist in keeping things moving, but they could not help when the correct routine had not been followed in the first place.

The year started with a look at what changes, if any, the industry wanted to see in the 0-licensing system, which at that point had been up and rtlnning for nine years.

Questionnaires had been sent out to all major industry bodies by a transport committee, to enable them to have their say in how the system should be modernised.

But the RHA and FTA said they were "appalled" at the time-scale given for completion of the forms—the end of the month. An RHA spokesman also said it was confused by one or two of the questions: "One question, 'Is the protection of the environment a legitimate aim of licensing?' seems to confuse the association."
