The 16-litre sixKit will have a unit injector-based fuel ;ystem in place of the in-line pump, and Is !xpected to appear before the end of 2003.

Volvo Powertrain says Its multi-million )ound investment is the first step "to align the industrial system for the next-gener

ation heavy diesel engine. As a result, capacity in the foundry on the new FPC (Future Process for Casting) line is being doubled to 80,000 cylinder blocks per year." Volvo will certainly need all the capacity it can get if the 12-litre engine platform Is to be shared throughout the Volvo, Renault and Mack family. The 16 litre 'big banger' is also likely to be used by Renault and Mack, not least to allow the latter to compete against similar big-volume diesels from Caterpillar and Cummins in the US and Australia.

Last year, after months of speculation, Volvo finally confirmed that it would be building a new 16-litre engine. Goran Moberg, head of Volvo Powertrain, declared: The project will serve as a model for continuing work with Volvo's new engine program. With a platform concept and joint technology as a base, we will develop an entirely new engine program with a four to fiveyear period from 150hp and above."
