0 The Health & Safely Executive has issued two exemption certificates to new regulations on hazardous bags for clinical waste that came into force on 1 January.

Under the changes, hauliers carrying clinical waste would have to have used new yellow bags with hazardous marks and shipping information printed in black on a white background. The exemption, which is indefinite, means hauliers can continue to use the same bags as they were using before 1 January.

Meanwhile, another exemption will allow the continued use of non-reflective hazard warning panels on the backs of tankers and trucks, provided the panels were manufactured before 31 December 1996.

The changes proposed they should be reflective—the unreflective ones can only be used until the end of 1998 provided they are dearly visible and waterproof.

The exemption does not apply to the orange panel required to be displayed at the front of all vehicles carrying dangerous goods. Hauliers unsure of changes to the carriage of dangerous goods can ring the HSE information line on 0541 545500 or write to the HSE Information Centre, Broad Lane Sheffield, 53 7HQ.
