• A City lawyer has been appointed as Western Traffic Commissioner to succeed Air Vice-Marshall Ronald Ashford who retired last May.
Christopher Heaps, 54, took over from John Mervyn Pugh, who covered the Western area on a temporary basis, on 6 January.

planned redrawing of area boundaries was abandoned.
He is particularly interested in modern transport topics and is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Transport as well as the Law Society Council.
Heaps, who is married with two daughters, became an equity partner in City
law firm Eversheds in 1971 and has published a number of books about railways.
