comedy The Fast Show wit welcome the publication of Off-Road Recovery Techniques by Nick Cole, a handy guide to rescuing your 4x4 when it's slipped off the road, embedded in sand, immersed in water or turned over in a gulch. This is a book for when the going gets rough—the front cover depicts anxious men shovelling sand under wheels to provide traction while the back cover shows a vehicle being winched up a riverbed. The slim volume is full of useful technical information, graphs and diagrams on bridging, traction, lifting and towing. This is a useful friend to have in the glove compartment next time you set off across the Sahara, although at £10.99 it does seem expensive for a 72-page paperback.
